چکیده

Human listeners can segregate sound sources based on differences in frequency content and timing. In addition, spatial separation has been shown to improve this ability. The work presented here is an attempt to characterise the effect of spatial factors on segregation when other distinguishing factors are either unavailable or unreliable. This is relevant to understanding how the auditory system deals with real environments, and is also relevant to the creation of virtual environments where particular auditory objects may need to be distinguishable from other objects. Experiments using various broadband sound sources (white noise, click trains, spoken words) indicate that the segregation of concurrent stimuli requires specific spatial arrangements that allow the auditory system to exploit binaural differences. Monaural spectral cues, while essential for spatialisation, seem to play little role in segregation under these conditions. However, they may be useful when competing stimuli have distinct temporal structures or do not fully coincide in time.

Spatial Segregation in Demography: A Short Review

Abstract. Spatial has always been an inherent component of demography, and demographic processes are inherently spatiotemporal. Recognizing the importance of spatial in general and spatial segregation in particular in demographic analysis has created new positions in demography and its conceptual and analytical frameworks. The notion of spatial segregation refers to the distribution of social...

Concurrent auditory perception difficulties in older adults with right hemisphere cerebrovascular accident

Background :Older adults with cerebrovascular accident (CVA) show evidence of auditory and speech perception problems. In present study, it was examined whether these problems are due to impairments of concurrent auditory segregation procedure which is the basic level of auditory scene analysis and auditory organization in auditory scenes with competing sounds.   Methods : Concurrent auditory...

Interdependent encoding of pitch, timbre, and spatial location in auditory cortex.

Because we can perceive the pitch, timbre, and spatial location of a sound source independently, it seems natural to suppose that cortical processing of sounds might separate out spatial from nonspatial attributes. Indeed, recent studies support the existence of anatomically segregated "what" and "where" cortical processing streams. However, few attempts have been made to measure the responses ...

The Perception of Multiple Broadband Noise Sources Presented Concurrently in Virtual Auditory Space

The effect of spatial separation on the ability of subjects to hear both sounds in a pair of concurrent broadband sounds presented in virtual auditory space was examined. Results suggested that this ability relied strongly on differences in the binaural cues delivered by the sounds, and stimulus pairs could not be separated if they delivered the same binaural cues. A relatively simple model was...

Surveying the Spatial Justice and planning theories with emphasis on Iran’s conditions

Segregation has been widely discussed by social scientists and especially by urban geographers and planners over the past decades. However, regardless of their focus, most of these studies view segregation as an obvious case of spatial injustice. I argue that this implicit relationship between segregation, (in) justice, and space needs to be reexamined. This paper approaches this task by review...
